Taxis can be a great choice if you need to get from A to B at times or to places not served by public transport. Nottingham City Council licenses all Hackney Carriage and private hire vehicles and drivers who work within the City boundary.  For your own safety only use licenced vehicles.

Hackney Carriages

Hackney Carriages are dark green cabs with the Nottingham City Council crest on both front doors. They display white licence plates on the front and rear of the vehicle and on a small plate inside the vehicle. Hackney Carriages do not need to be pre-booked and can pick up passengers at taxi ranks.

Private hire vehicles

Private hire vehicles can be any make or model, but must display yellow licence plates on the front and rear of the vehicle and on a small plate inside on the vehicle windscreen. They must also have the name of the hire company on display on either side of the vehicle. They cannot be hailed in the street and must be pre-booked by telephone or in person. If possible get a recommendation from a friend or venue staff for a licenced taxi firm.

Some top tips for using taxis

The Essential Travel Guide has some great tips for using taxis and private hire vehicles, and Nottingham City Council’s guide to getting home safely provides advice to night-owls using taxis to get home.
