1st September 2006
Greater Nottingham’s campaign to promote public transport, cycling and walking, The Big Wheel, has been endorsed by the United Nations Environmental Programme as one of the best of its kind in the world.
The Greater Nottingham Transport Partnership’s brand is being held up as a shining example of how to promote sustainable development and proudly takes its place on a database of outstanding advertising campaigns from all over the world. It appears alongside promotional work from multi-national companies, governments, local authorities and other organisations.
Twenty four of The Big Wheel’s distinctive campaigns, featuring stylised cartoon characters, are included in The Creative Gallery section of the UN website. Anyone logging on can look at the examples of best practice in the field aimed at inspiring others developing their own communications campaigns on sustainability issues.
The Big Wheel advertised on Nottingham’s bus stops and bill boards, in the local media and also uses events and PR to encourage people to leave their cars at home.
Lynn Hanna/Derk Brewer of The Big Wheel says: “We are delighted to be honoured with such an accolade. We have over the last four years achieved a high brand awareness amongst the people of Nottingham and beyond via our imaginative campaigns around transport and the presentation of the long term vision for the conurbation’s transport planning, policies and projects.
“The results speak for themselves - there are many signs Nottingham is starting to turn transport around. The amount of traffic on our roads hasn’t grown over the last few years, while there are millions more journeys by bus.”
