These routes are made for walking
Nottingham City Council works on a major mapping project
Those clever people over at Nottingham City Council are doing a huge project to map out all the walkable paths in the city – from small alleyways to major Public Rights of Way. And of course the Big Track, our 10 mile car-free walking and cycling route, will be on there!
This is all to create a complete and accurate picture of our walking landscape and so you can get up to date information about what’s what in walking routes. Once they’ve finished they can use the information to help you all get out and about on your feet. They might even use the project as the basis for an online journey planner for walkers, which could tie into existing websites such as http://www.walkit.com
This website currently covers London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Newcastle/Gateshead and most recently Derby. Not only will it work out a route for you (direct or less busy- it’s up to you) but it works out how long it’ll take and how many calories you’ll burn and even how much CO2 you’ve avoided releasing as a result. In London they now have a feature that will generate a route for you that avoids high levels of air pollution, so you can enjoy walking in London without worrying about your lungs! This is a great tool to use if you’re taking any trips this summer, so why not check it out?
Good luck to those working on the City Council’s mapping project, see you all on the Big Track!
