Taking the hassle out of paying to travel on public transport makes people more likely to use it.
Nottingham has been working towards this in several ways, including issuing single tickets that allow for both bus and tram use, making tickets widely available through a range of outlets and producing smartcards with convenient renewal options. The result is that people have more incentive to leave the car at home, reducing congestion and pollution.
Kangaroo tickets were introduced in 2004 and have gone from strength to strength, with annual sales at over 1 million. Kangaroo tickets allow passengers the flexibility of hopping on and off all trams, trains and buses in the Nottingham area, providing a convenient and cost-effective ticket option.
Easy access to public transport has been facilitated by the introduction of 134 local PayPoint retail outlets in Greater Nottingham, so that passengers can pick up their tickets at the same time as their shopping.
Since their launch in April 2006, smartcards have been used across Greater Nottingham to provide easy access to transport, leisure and library facilities. Adult, Senior and Mobility Citycards are available, functioning as both a travel, and leisure pass, as well as offering discounts at 120 Nottingham retailers.
Cost-saving ticketing and payment methods help create a more seamless public transport system, incentivising people and businesses to use buses, trams and trains, which in turn reduces congestion and helps the environment.
