Welcome to the The Big Wheel - Centre of Excellence

getting the transport message across: achievements

It sounds simple, but people need to know what their transport options are in order to make informed choices.

People often have out-dated ideas about public transport, walking and cycling so it's important for us to make them aware of the many improvements to Greater Nottingham's sustainable transport network. Once people are aware of improvements they're encouraged to leave their cars at home and try a new mode of transport.

The Big Wheel an innovative and award-winning brand and marketing campaign, was established in 2001 in order to communicate Greater Nottingham's sustainable transport plans and aspirations.

Recent initiatives include:

The Big Track

A 10 mile car-free waterside track linking walking and cycling routes in and around the City.
Over 60,000 copies of these pocket-sized guides have already been distributed.

The 2007 Big Day Out

A family event held at Nottingham Castle designed to communicate the sustainable transport message in fun and creative ways. This was the most successful Big Day Out to date attracting over 14,000 visitors with 86% of them getting there using sustainable transport.

Rather than being an optional extra, the marketing and tone of message for Nottingham's sustainable transport network has been integral to changing behaviour and helping employers and individuals to make informed choices about their travel plans - with all of the attendant financial, social, health and environmental benefits.
