Welcome to the The Big Wheel - Centre of Excellence

greater nottingham
a centre of excellence for transport delivery

We would like to share our success story and give you the opportunity to see what's been happening in and around Nottingham.

This is a fantastic example of an integrated transport system serving the needs of the local community. It is the sort of joined up transport planning that offers people a real choice when deciding their travel plans and makes it easy for people to leave their cars at home, reducing congestion in Nottingham.

Secretary of State for Transport

More than getting from A to B

We believe that transport helps people to fulfil their potential, linking them with friends, family, workplaces and leisure facilities. Transport enables ease of movement, combats social exclusion, protects the environment and promotes economic growth.

Partnership working

Partnership working is at the heart of what has made Greater Nottingham a Centre of Excellence for local transport delivery - from the Local Transport Plan (jointly prepared by Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Council) - to collaborative working with transport operators, the business sector and key stakeholders.

A different approach

The Big Wheel is a unique marketing campaign specifically devised to promote Greater Nottingham's sustainable transport network.

It really works

We feel passionately about our integrated network and want to shout from the rooftops and tell people all about it - here are just some of the results:

  • Levels of bus and tram travel have increased by 10% since 2000 and Nottingham
now has one of the highest levels of commuting by bus.
  • Since 2000, traffic has grown by less than 1%.
  • Annual satisfaction with Nottingham's bus services increased by 10%
    between 2003/4 and 2006/07.
  • An integrated transport network has been a key factor in the economic success of Nottingham's city centre - one of the top five shopping destinations in the UK.
