WALKING & CYCLING

So why would you want people to walk or cycle to your site?

Well, we'll tell you.

Because regular cyclists have fitness levels that are ten years below their actual age. Because aerobic fitness can be boosted by 17% in just six weeks by cycling four miles a day. And because anyone who cycles to work isn't giving off any greenhouse gases, just a big warm glow to the world.

So, by encouraging walking and cycling you are encouraging your staff to be healthy, stress-free and productive - and wealthier than they would be if they came to work by car. You're also saving car parking spaces. Oh, and you're helping to save the planet. All of which can't be bad.

So what stops people from getting on their bikes, when around a third of us own them, often rusting quietly in the garage?

Often all people need is a little encouragement. The Big Wheel can help here, by giving your organisation free cycle maps, including the very popular Big Track leaflet, covering the ten-mile off-road waterside route that runs past many big employers. You can put a link through to the Big Track electronic map from your website for free, too. Contact bigwheel@gnpartnership.org.uk for maps and booklets.

Cycling can require a little confidence and skill, too. And that can be brought to your organisation, free, via cycle training for your staff, courtesy of Ridewise www.ridewise.org.uk, email info@ridewise.org.uk or phone Graham Hubbard on 07818 263738. It's amazing how much happier people are on two wheels after they've had a little expert advice.

Oh and you might like to think of what might make life a little easier for cyclists - and walkers - at your site. That might be showers, lockers or secure bike storage. We might be able to help you here with grants.

Look out, too, for another Big Wheel brochure, detailing the main walking routes through the city, with some specially researched local history to add interest, by the Big Wheel's young fount-of-all-knowledge Chris Matthews. Contact bigwheel@gnpartnership.org.uk for details.
