There are lots of organisations that will help you get out and about and enjoy walking.
Look out for Walk Week in May when there will be tons of events to encourage everyone to get back on their feet. In the meantime, try some of these.
Get Moving Nottingham is a campaign run by Nottingham City Primary Care Trust’s specialist health promotion team to encourage people over 50 years old in the more deprived areas of the city to get active. It promotes the benefits of gentle exercise along with local activities suitable for older people like the Best Foot Forward programme of seven weekly free guided walks across Nottingham City. For further information visit www.getmovingnottingham.nhs.uk.
The British Heart Foundation and the Countryside Agency’s ‘Walking the way to health’ initiative (WHI) aims to get more people of any age walking in their own communities, especially those who take little exercise or live in areas of poor health. Visit www.whi.org.uk for more information and to find out about local walks led by trained volunteer walk leaders.
The Ramblers’ Association can also help you find a led local group walk group that’s right for you. Every week Ramblers volunteers organise a range of group walks catering for all ages and abilities. Details of most of these walks are listed online on the group walks finder on the association’s website at www.ramblers.org.uk.
Nottinghamshire County Council also produces a leaflet listing guided walks that happen in the County. To view this online visit http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/guidednottswalks.pdf or call 0115 977 2166 for a paper copy.
