Walking for health

Walking is perfect for keeping you fit and healthy because almost everyone can do it and you can do it anywhere at anytime! It doesn’t need to be hard, even small things like getting rid of your remote control or using the stairs instead of the lift will mean you’re getting more exercise.

You should be aiming to do at least 30 minutes exercise five times a week, but you don’t need to do it all in one go. Walking just 10 minutes three times a day will get you to your total in no time and help you to build up to walking longer distances comfortably and safely. It may still sound like a lot but 30 minutes is just 2% of your day!

And if you do start walking more there are absolutely loads of health benefits you’ll notice. It will reduce your blood pressure, strengthen muscles and bones and help you lose weight. And that means you’ll reduce your chances of getting all sorts of nasty diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and the list goes on.

And when your body starts working better you’ll start to feel better, exercise releases feel good chemicals called endorphins that make you happy. You’ll find you sleep better at night and that as your blood pumps through your body faster your brain will get more oxygen helping you to think more clearly. All this helps you to cope with stress and take life’s little annoyances in your stride.
