More and more people are turning to the bus in a bid to find cheaper, greener transport – and to avoid the frustration of being stuck in traffic jams! Whatever your reason for thinking of switching it’s an excellent time to get on the bus. Bus use in Nottingham is already the highest in the country, outside London, and it has increased by a fantastic 3% in the past year. Here’s why:
Value for money
Latest figures from the RAC put the cost of driving at a staggering £16.85 a day (including depreciation, insurance, etc – for full details of how they reached the cost click here) If you travel regularly and use one of the season tickets available you could make huge savings, but even just using daily tickets will end up saving you around £15 per week on fuel!

Better for the environment
By choosing to get the bus, and taking one car off the road you’ll help to reduce carbon emissions. Even just swapping your car for the bus once a week will help make a difference. Our local transport providers are excellent at ensuring their buses are young and efficient – meaning their emissions are low. NCT is investigating alternative fuels so that in the future their buses could be even greener. So if you want to do your bit for the environment it’s time to get the bus.
Better for you
NCT and trent barton are continually investing in their buses to make sure that you can travel in style and comfort. Both transport operators work hard to ensure all their buses are fully accessible to wheelchairs and buggies. Currently 90% of NCT’s buses are accessible and disability compliant – and 100% are buggy friendly. A whopping 94% of trent barton’s buses meet the grade, and as new buses come in the figures will go up. Getting the bus may also be good for your mental health. Instead of sitting in traffic and fuming you could be reading a book, preparing for work or just taking the time to have a break and daydream – bliss.
Saving you time
Our transport operators offer frequent and reliable services across Greater Nottingham, with new services being added to get you exactly where you need to go. They have amongst the best reliability and punctuality services in the country – with awards to prove it! There are miles of bus lanes and a number of bus priority measures that mean buses are one of the quickest and most direct way of getting from A to B.
Safe as houses
The Respect for Transport initiative, introduced in 2004, has seen police, transport operators and other partners working together. There are loads of different projects – from installing CCTV in bus stops to on duty police officers travelling by public transport.
The easy way to travel
Buses are just one aspect of Nottingham’s joined-up transport network – it’s easy to hop between different services and types of transport. Real-time displays at bus (and tram!) stops will let you know when to expect the service you need. If you’re really on the ball you can check this information online at www.travelineeastmidlands.co.uk . It’s an online journey planner that can tell you exactly how to get to where you need to. You can even get the information sent straight to your mobile to keep you in the know when you’re on the go.
