Where to go for train information

There are loads of websites out there with excellent up to date train information – for whatever you need to know.  Here are a few we think it’s worth bookmarking:

National Rail

A one stop shop for all your train related needs.  They have an online journey planner, live departures(and a text service which will send the details direct to your mobile), train operator details – and you can buy tickets from them too!  This is a great site that can answer pretty much any question you may have.

East Midlands Trains

In 2007 East Midlands Trains took over services that were operated by Midland Mainline and Central Trains.  They now operate the majority of trains that run into Nottingham.  Their website has a ticket finder, real-time running updates and details of all their routes and services.  Easy to use, with tourist information for the main cities they serve, great stuff!

CrossCountry

Another operator who runs services to Nottingham.  Their website has all the features you’d expect – live information, journey planners, route details plus details of events in areas they serve.  They’ve even created a Facebook application that allows you to map your mates – and plan your train journeys to visit them!

Northern Rail

The newest operator offering services to Nottingham.  As of December 2008 they run a direct service between Nottingham and Leeds, and they have a great website.  Browse their main pages for timetables, offers and accessibility advice or personalise the page to receive updates and offers just for you.

Eurostar

It doesn’t run trains to Nottingham directly but the opening of the brand new St Pancras International has given us a direct link to the continent, so you can be in Paris in no time at all.  On Eurostar’s website you can book tickets that will take you all the way from Nottingham to Paris – you can even book your hotel at the same time.

thetrainline.com

If you want to buy your tickets online this is a great place to try.  It shows all the available tickets for your journey and allows you to check if two singles would be cheaper than a return (and vice versa).  You can buy international and Eurostar tickets via this website.  They also have some great gadgets to help you get the most out of travelling by train.  Sign up to their ticket alert service and you’ll get emails when advance fares become available on your chosen route – so you need never miss out on the cheap fares again!
