Safer City and Neighbourhoods
making the city centre and neighbourhoods safer: achievements
Most of us want to live in neighbourhoods that are quiet, have clean air and where traffic does not pose a danger to our children.
The development of Home Zones in Nottingham has started to address these issues, while the Clear Zone has significantly reduced congestion and pollution at the very heart of the City. Developments such as these are beneficial to employees and employers alike, having a positive impact on quality of life.
Home Zones
There are four Home Zones in Greater Nottingham, transforming the areas of Nobel Road in Clifton, Kennington Road in Radford, Lady Bay in West Bridgford and Birch Avenue, Beeston Rylands. Measures include creating a ‘drop and go’ zone serving the local primary school, using sculptures to complement traffic calming measures and tree planting, lane narrowing and 20mph speed reductions.
The Clear Zone
Completed in early 2002, the Clear Zone is a major scheme to restrict traffic on the roads around Nottingham’s Old Market Square. The scheme has helped to improve air quality, reduce noise and congestion and make the streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as facilitating tram and bus movement around the City.
Pedestrian areas
Environmental improvements and restrictions on traffic in general have come together to make communities safer for pedestrians in Greater Nottingham. In some key shopping locations priority has been given to pedestrians, cyclists and buses, with additional enhancements in the form of railings, seating, paving and cycle racks.
