Travel Planning

For many years transport planning professionals and government agencies have recognised that as a nation we cannot ‘engineer’ our way out of the problems presented by congestion, the worsening environment and social exclusion by building more roads and by people owning more cars. Quite simply it just won’t work.

One set of solutions that are now working around the globe are called ‘Smarter Choices‘ or ’soft’ transport measures. These include Travel Plans and are all ways that encourage people to undertake less solo occupancy vehicle trips (driving on your own) by promoting and facilitating the alternatives that include more cycling, walking, use of public transport, car sharing and working from home.

What are travel plans

A Travel Plan is a package of measures that encourage staff to choose alternatives to driving in cars on their own and also to reduce the need to travel at all.

Each plan is tailored to a particular site and can include a range of measures which will make a positive impact that site, e.g. setting up a car sharing scheme; providing cycle facilities; and negotiating improved bus services. The aim is to make travel alternatives easier, simpler and more likely to work for everyone.
