Tips For Beacon Success

Stage 2: The Assessment Day

  • The assessors are keen to hear about results and see evidence of success in both the application form and the assessment visit
  • Highlight how you have addressed equality and diversity aspects in both the application form and the assessment visit
  • The assessors prefer the chance to talk to people and visit projects - avoid "death by powerpoint"
  • Involve service users/customers and partners if possible/appropriate.
  • Ensure the assessment visit runs smoothly and to time - planning and briefing the participants is key
  • Plan well in advance and think of different scenarios for different start times
  • Devise innovative formats
  • Line up key Councillors and senior officers (even though the date is not known) - it is CRITICAL to have their support and presence
  • Pay attention to assessment form feedback and tailor your event to address comments
  • Be realistic about what you can achieve in the time available – far-flung site visits may not be the best use of time
