An introduction to Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council administer two very different geographical areas – both with their own specific challenges and opportunities for accessibility planning.
- Nottinghamshire County Council is the strategic planning authority and the local transport authority for the districts of Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe in Greater Nottingham and the districts of Mansfield, Ashfield, Newark & Sherwood and Bassetlaw in North Nottinghamshire.
- Nottingham City Council is a unitary authority and is the strategic and local planning authority and local transport authority for Nottingham City.

Nottingham City is the hub of the Greater Nottingham conurbation, making partnership working fundamental to our approach to transport and accessibility.
Despite outward prosperity and a strong economy, the city exhibits high levels of deprivation. High concentrations of worklessness exist with a mismatch of skills and jobs. The key challenge is to continue to develop and promote the economy of the city region whilst ensuring that the most disadvantaged remain connected to the opportunities being created.
Outside Greater Nottingham no single major travel to work flow exists. Traditional industries have been replaced with shift pattern employment located on the peripheral industrial estates. Large parts of the county are rural with a dispersed pattern of services and facilities. These factors pose significant challenges to ensure access to jobs, services and facilities.
This diversity gives us experience in a range of urban and rural situations, along with the different challenges and opportunities that this presents for accessibility planning.
We also have a strong track record of developing and implementing innovative major public transport projects. Recent successes include the introduction of the highly successful Nottingham Express Transit (NET) tram network and the development of a range of transport solutions including a network of "link" bus services. These serve major employment and health sites, shopping and education facilities (including services to East Midlands and Robin Hood airports), together with Medilink, Citylinks, Locallinks, Shoplinks and Unilinks.
