The Big Wheel wants to say a big “well done” to all the staff and students at Claremont Primary School, the worthy winners of the Big Foot 2008!  The Big Foot is awarded to the school that does the most to promote walking to their students, they receive a beautiful certificate to hang on their wall and the impressive metre long wooden sculpture of a foot.

The dedicated staff run two – that’s right, two – walking buses every morning before school.  In case you don’t know that means the staff (or “conductors” ) walk a predetermined route, collecting kids at specific points (”bus stops” ).  Not only has this helped to keep the students happy and healthy, but also it’s helped to improve attendance at the school.

That’s all on top of taking part in Nottingham City Council’s annual Footprints campaign!  During the 10 weeks Footprints runs for pupils get a fab walking passport to fill with shiny stickers – earning a sticker for every day they walk to school.  Any kids who fill their passports get a shiny foot-shaped badge as a reward.  It’s a great way to motivate pupils and get them excited about walking to school – as staff at Claremont Primary School know well.

Keep up the good work – you really are walking class heroes!

If you fancy your schools chances of winning the Big Foot 2009, you need to register to take part in Footprints.  It’s over for this school year, but will kick off again in autumn 2009.  Contact Diane Topple by email, School Travel Planner at Nottingham City Council, for more information or general school travel planning advice.
