Wrap up warm and get outdoors this winter
For the past few days Britain has been facing bitterly cold weather – and that looks set to continue. How then are you meant to stick to your new years resolution to cycle to work, walk to the shops or just generally get fit in the good old outdoors? Follow the Big Wheel’s advice of course!
Wear Layers
Three thinner layers are better than one thick one – and why’s that? When we exercise we get hot, so pretty quickly that big jumper might become a burden. The key is to wear breathable fabrics, and if you need to, take layers off – that way you’ll keep toasty without getting sweaty!
Wear waterproofs
If it’s raining or snowing that’s a no-brainer, but waterproofs can help to block out the effects of wind chill too.
Wear a hat
Wearing a hat will help to keep you cosy and warm. It’s just good sense.
Wear reflective gear
It could be a coat, wrist strap, high vis jacket – whatever you fancy, just make sure you can be seen. (Cyclists should also have lights on their bike and walkers may feel safer carrying a torch.) It gets dark earlier (and quicker) during the winter months so you need to take extra precautions. Even if you’re going out in the middle of the day bad weather conditions may mean poor visibility. It may not be your trendiest item of clothing, but it could be the most important.
Most importantly of all…
Only do what you feel comfortable with!
You may have planned to cycle to work everyday, but if it’s icy, dark and you just don’t feel safe don’t push yourself to do it anyway. You can still pop out for a refreshing stroll in your lunch hour, or take the bike out for a leisurely ride at the weekend when it’s brighter.
Or if you feel extremely cold – despite taking all precautions and walking or cycling as fast as you can – hop on a bus, jump on a tram or flag down a taxi to take you the rest of the way. There’s no shame in doing it, and it might stop you from coming down with a nasty cold, or something worse!
