Snowed in?

Snow falls across the country

Gosh, when we first wrote this article on Monday we didn’t expect to need to rewrite it so soon, but this Thursday has seen even heavier snow than we had then!

It’s pretty safe to say that all of Nottingham is experiencing difficulties.  The official advice from the Met Office is to stay at home, and only travel if absolutely necessary.  So if you have the luxury, wrap up in a cosy blanket and get yourself a hot drink!

It’s difficult to give you more information than that at the moment.  Simply put conditions are changing regularly so to get up to the minute advice the best thing to do is listen to local radio.  All transport operators are keeping the stations informed so any sudden changes will be announced.  If you prefer to contact operators directly the numbers are at the bottom of the page, or visit the National Rail website.

It’s worth noting that although no further snow is predicted for today or tomorrow, conditions are likely to remain treacherous – things won’t get better instantly.  If you do choose to drive click here to go Travelwise for live road reports and live traffic cameras so you know what you’re up against.  Even if the particular roads you want to travel on are open and showing no incidents remember that conditions are difficult.  You should take blankets (both to wrap up in and to lie in front of tires for extra traction), food, a torch and if possible a flask of hot drink with you in case you get stuck.  Some websites also advise taking a shovel and/or grit.  Call someone at your destination to let them know you’re setting out.

While you’re on the road keep a local radio station on to keep up to date on the road conditions, remember to leave more room between cars than you normally would.  Go slower and take it easy being more gentle on the brakes, accelerator and steering wheel.  In short be cautious, it’s tough driving in the snow.

Be safe and keep warm.
