Big Wheel goes to the Proms

Published on September 11, 2007

I went to the Last Night at The Proms at the weekend and it was truly remarkable. It was my first time at the event and I would thoroughly recommend it.

It had it all… the music, the fireworks, the small children playing songs that make you want to wave the national flag of your choice and sing at the top of your lungs…it was all there in abundance. And, what made the whole thing really fabulous was that I left the car at home!

I took the car keys off my key ring (I didn’t want to carry any unnecessary items) and made the journey down to Hyde Park without my little car. I’ve never driven down to London before – I’m a big fan of catching the train when I go ‘down south’. However, this time I was in charge of a group of friends who were going to Hyde Park with me and I was a bit nervous about letting them all loose in the transport system. How would I explain it to their families if I ‘accidentally’ misplaced them on a train going in the wrong direction…or even worse if I herded them onto the Eurostar at Kings Cross.

The journey comprised of car sharing, tram, train, tube and bus. Door to door it took around 3 hours. It was brilliant…and I met some great people on the journey, most notably a father and a small child who were somewhat over come by the excitement of the weekends rugby games.

Anyway, I guess the point of me mentioning this is that the transport element of the weekend really added something nice to the experience. We saw LOADS of beautiful countryside and countless herons, cows, sheep and unusual things from the train window. We met LOADS of different people from all over the UK and we got to relax, chat and plan our next weekend away.

All in all it was perfect.

…and I’ve already made a note in my diary to book my travel and accommodation early for next years event!
