Research shows that policies to reduce climate change have a positive impact on health

We’ve been telling you for years that choosing the greener travel option is good for your health and new research shows the scientists agree.

In a series of articles in medical journal the Lancet we’re told how policies to cut carbon emissions could have a direct impact on our health.  They cover all aspects of carbon reduction from breeding less livestock, which could reduce heart disease, to cutting our use of carbon-based electricity, which would give wide-ranging health benefits.  As you’d expect though, we were especially interested in what they had to say about sustainable transport.

Their findings were simple – if we all cycle and walk more and use our cars less this could massively improve our health.  Not only would we have much cleaner air to breathe, but by moving more we’ll have less problems that are linked to physical inactivity.   That means less of us will have heart problems, dementia and we’ll all feel happier with less of us suffering from depression – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We all know that there’s a growing problem with obesity and related health problems including diabetes.  But just 30 minutes exercise 5 times a week is enough to keep your body in peak condition.  We also know it can be hard to find time in your busy schedules to get that exercise.  And that’s why getting around on foot or by bike is a great thing to do – it means you don’t have to go out of your way to get fit and healthy.

And if your nervous about getting back on your bike or feel too unfit to start walking to work, we can help.  There’s loads of information and advice on the For You pages of our website.  We’ve got maps of great walking and cycling routes and can tell you about groups like Ridewise who offer free cycle training to individuals.  If you have any questions that our website doesn’t answer just email us and we’ll do our best to help you out.

So what are you waiting for?  Make the effort to leave your car at home today and you’ll be helping the planet – and yourself!
