Big Wheel Business Club award winner East Midlands Airport is running a Big Green Week to promote greener living from 12th – 16th October 2009 – why not try some of their ideas in your own business?
The Big Wheel awarded East Midlands Airport the title of “Best Regional Plan” in the Big Wheel Business Club Awards 2008, in recognition of their excellent marketing of green travel. Once again the airport has impressed us with their week-long environmental initiative Big Green Week, taking place 12th – 16th October 2009.
The Big Green Week throws a spotlight on the ways businesses and employees at the site can reduce their carbon footprint and save some cash in the process. Every day there will be green initiatives and events to engage employees. From green transport options to wildlife walks, recycling opportunities and low carbon buildings there are lots of fun things to get involved with.
There will be a Green Travel Lunches for anyone who travels to work sustainably one day and Bikers Breakfast for anyone who cycles to work on another. And to make sure as many people as possible can take advantage of the free lunch they are even offering travel makeovers in the run-up. These travel makeovers will provide a free personalised travel plan to attendees. Employees who take part in these could also walk away with free bus tickets to give public transport a go, or a car share partner to split the cost of driving to work.
There will be car share coffee mornings and afternoon tea to show employees how to use East Midlands Airport’s Liftshare scheme to find themselves a car sharing match. And anyone who works at the site can attend a Green Travel Incentives Workshop to explain what would encourage them to use the bus, car share, cycle or walk to work.
All of these green travel initiatives are part of a wider programme that includes planting sessions, recycling challenges and even a special inter departmental competition for a cash prize of £250.
East Midlands Airport holds their Big Green Week as part of their ongoing commitment to reduce their carbon emissions – something that can only be done by everybody working together. Using fun and informative activities they show how easy going green can be, how it benefits individuals as well as the airport and they thank everyone for making the effort. If you’re looking to promote your own green travel initiatives the mix of an informal setting, an incentive and some key information could help to make them a success – however big or small the event.
