Take a leaf out of Green Streets’ book and make every day a walk or ride day

The October Green Streets West Bridgford celebrations take place this Friday, 30 October 2009.

The monthly Green Streets West Bridgford celebrations take place this Friday with offers designed to encourage you to go green at lots of local shops and cafes.  So get your skates on, put on your walking shoes, get on your bike, hop on a bus – in fact use any form of sustainable transport to get there and enjoy the day.

Wear green to show your support for this great initiative asking local people to spend one day a month trying out walking, cycling or public transport.  Especially now the days are getting shorter taking time to get out in the fresh air for a stroll or a leisurely bike ride is a fantastic thing to do.

Exercise is important to keep you fit and healthy year round, but when the nights draw in it can help stave off the winter blues.  And walking or cycling outdoors is miles better than joining a gym – for loads of reasons.  If you exercise outside you’ll also have the benefit of fresh air and sunlight, which both have a positive impact on your mood.  Walking is completely free and cycling is very low cost, leaving you more money to spend on the festive season.  And you can easily work these activities into your daily routine – simply going for a walk in your lunch break or cycling to the shops for your milk in the morning is enough to feel the benefit.

Are you concerned about feeling the cold?  If you walk or cycle at a brisk pace you’ll soon warm up, but in the meantime wear several thin layers to keep you toasty – you can easily take a layer off if you get too hot.  Cycling style blog, London Cycle Chic has more ideas and advice on dressing for cycling in the winter weather if you’re still stuck on what to wear.

Don’t know where to go?  The Big Wheel can help you out, we have loads of cycling and walking maps available – both on and offline – to help you get out and about.  The Big Track is a particularly good route – it’s car-free and takes in wildlife, historical attractions and top sporting venues on the way.  If you can’t find what you’re looking for on our Get On The Big Wheel pages get in touch and we’ll see if we can find the right route for you.

So you see, you can still get out and enjoy cycling and walking in the winter so be inspired by Green Streets West Bridgford and have your own walk or ride day, week or even year!
