… and take part in National Walk Week 2009

Did you know that Monday 27th April 2009 marks the first day of National Walk Week?  It’s a week packed full of fun free walking activities – there’s never been a better time to get on your feet.

There are chances to try Nordic Walking, the brilliant new way to walk that’ll use muscles you didn’t know you had.  Or, if you’re a new mum, why not join the Pushy Mothers for a fantastic free fitness class that’ll mean you can exercise with your kids?  The Best Foot Forward programme of walks is another great way to get walking and meet friends.

Why do we like walking so much?  It’s a fantastic form of exercise.  Anyone can do it, anytime, anywhere.  You don’t need any special equipment and it’s totally free!

Even short walks can help you to get the five 30 minutes of exercise you need to keep your body in tip top condition.  That means you’ll be reducing the risk of getting nasty health complaints like heart disease, obesity, stroke and diabetes.  Getting out in the fresh air will also help get your endorphins flowing.  They’re the feel-good chemicals that make you feel happy.

Whatever you do, make an effort to get on your feet this week.  Try walking to the shops, getting off your bus a stop earlier or going for a relaxing stroll in your lunch hour.  And remember all those free walking activities we told you about – just click here to find out more.

If you want to try something a bit different, then why not take part in the The East Midlands Airport Perimeter Trail.  It’s a six-mile long, picturesque nature trail. Taking you through woodland, grassland and flower meadow, the Trail emcompasses the Airport site, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Trent Valley and local countryside, as well as the Airport’s day to day operations.

Picnic benches, art sculptures and information boards can be found around the Trail, helping walkers to identify the wide variety of plants, birds, inserts and small mammals which can be found around the Airport site.

Further information on the Airport Trail can be found by visiting the East Midlands Airport website.

Have we ever told you about the Big Track?  It’s a simply amazing car free waterside walking and cycling route that’s 10 miles of pure pleasure.  Click here to check out the interactive online map.
