Bike to Work launch

On Thursday 14th May 2009, our friends at Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils and the Rural Community Action Nottinghamshire (RCAN) launched the Bike to Work scheme.  This fab pilot project helps people in Nottingham and Hucknall to get on their bike to get to work or school without spending a fortune.  Here’s how:

Commuters can borrow a bike for six months through the Bike to Work scheme and at the end of the six months the bike is theirs to keep.  Yes, really.  For just £10 a month for the six month period, participants will receive route planning advice from the Bike to Work team.  They will also get lights, hi-vis vest, helmet and a lock to keep themselves and their bike safe.  On top of all that, they have chance to improve their cycling skills with help from Ridewise, the not-for-profit cycle trainers.

Before you all rush to sign up, this scheme is not open to everyone.  To be eligible for Bike to Work, applicants must live in Nottingham City or Hucknall.  They must have recently started (or about to start) a new job or training course and be having problems with transport to work or college.  Applicants also agree to take part in an induction session, to help them to improve their cycling confidence and skills.

If you meet the criteria and want to apply, or are just interested in finding out more scheme contact the Bike to Work team at RCAN on 01623 727620 or email wheels2work@rcan.org.uk

Bike to Work is part of the councils’ award-winning work to improve access to essential services for everyone.  Click here to find out more about the other ways they are doing this.  Councillor Jane Urquhart, Portfolio Holder for Transport at Nottingham City Council was at the launch event; watch what she had to say about the scheme.
