Get fighting fit for winter

Get into exercise to stay healthy – in body and mind – this winter

The nights are drawing in, the days are getting colder and it’s not long now til the clocks go back.  With all that in mind you’re starting to feel the need to hibernate and exercising is the last thing on your mind.

Sound familiar?  You wouldn’t be alone, but now may be a more important time than ever to get on your bike or go for that walk.

When the weather gets colder all kinds of bugs and colds start doing the rounds and many people are hit by the winter blues – or more serious mental health problems.  In fact an estimated half a million people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is a form of winter depression.  And yet a simple thing like regular exercise could keep the worst of the winter bugs at bay, as exercise boosts your immune system and improves your mood.

Now’s the perfect time to get the exercise habit, before the days get too dark and cold.  It’s currently Nottingham Mental Health Awareness Weeks (Monday 5th – Friday 16th October 2009), when there will be all sorts of activities going on to encourage you to take time for your mind.  On most days there is some form of activity – including guided walks and yoga sessions as well as club nights and film screenings.

But don’t worry if you can’t join in on any of these activities, there’s still lots you can do.  The Rural Rides programme of guided rides runs right up until the start of December offering people of all abilities the chance to cycle and chat.  And if you prefer to go it alone we’ve got a whole range of cycling and walking routes available on our website or as hard copies.  From the fantastic Big Track, which is 10 miles of car-free fun, to the A Walk in the Park pack that shows lovely routes around parks and open spaces in Nottingham there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy.

And don’t forget even small amounts of exercise will help your fitness levels.  So try climbing the stairs instead of taking the lift or cycling to the shops instead of taking the car.  Soon you’ll be feeling fitter and fighting off both the bugs and the blues.
