Enjoy a staycation this summer

Fun ideas for how to spend the holidays at home.

The holidays are approaching fast and this year more of you are watching the pennies and staying in the UK.  If you’re looking for something fun, exciting and a little bit different to do on your staycation then let the Big Wheel inspire you.

Have you ever given volunteering a go?  It’s the ideal chance to get involved with some exciting projects without spending your hard-earned cash, and there are so many different things you can do.  You could help out sustainable transport charity Sustrans or even get involved with the London 2012 preparations.  If you want more ideas visit the Volunteering England website.

Or if you fancy doing something more challenging why not follow in the tyre tracks of comedian Dave Gorman?  He’s cycling the length and breadth of Britain on his latest tour.  And closer to home these three lads have planned to climb three highest peaks in the UK – and cycle between them.  You don’t have to take on such a mammoth challenge but why not consider cycling further than you normally would to reach a pretty campsite?  Or riding a more challenging route on a day trip?  We’ve got lots of maps and routes on our Cycling pages if that takes your fancy.

If you want to explore the country but prefer to take in the sites at a more leisurely pace then try out our trains.  The fantastic website The Man in Seat Sixty-One can tell you anything you want to know about navigating the rail network – both here and abroad.  Whether it’s a sleeper to Scotland or a late train to London he can give you all the advice you need.

We hope that’s given you some inspiration – we have loads more ideas for travelling sustainably if you browse our website.  Use the For You pages or search for what you’re after.
